I have a quite a treat for you guys today. Over the long weekend, I had the pleasure of chatting with Priyanka Vaidya, founder of a new little wedding biz, Priyanka Presents Events. I introduced myself to her a while back in Chicago, but made sure to keep in touch with her despite my move. She has a wealth of knowledge!
During our convo this weekend, I asked her a few questions for me :) and a few for you guys. Amidst a lot of jokes and laughs, we got to a good place!
Q: What made you fall in love with wedding planning?
A: Priyanka was in India when it first hit her. It was the peak of wedding season and she was on the brink of graduating from undergrad. She always loved the idea of being a wedding coordinator, but could never pinpoint it. Seeing all the gorgeous weddings in India really gave her the clarity she needed.
Once she got back and started thinking about starting her own wedding planning business, she was really inspired by all the small businesses that were succeeding around her.
Q: What were the first few steps you took when you realized this was something you wanted to do longterm?
A: Priyanka’s first few steps were rooted in research. She spent all her free time scouring the web to learn as much as she could. She also picked up a gig as an Intern with MB Classics in the Chicagoland area, and followed it up with experience at Studio AG, a design studio.
Priyanka also worked hard to discover her strengths. She didn’t want to go around touting that she was a wedding planner without understanding everything that went into it, and how she fit in.
This was when Priyanka started focusing on her blog and building her brand. She began offering her services for free to build relationships with vendors and couples.
Q: What’s your favorite part of the job?
A: Priyanka loves the day-of coordination. The chaos, excitement, and finally seeing the emotional side of what she does. How beautiful the occasion is, in general. After a long, stressful journey with clients, it’s wonderful to see a wedding day executed to perfection, she said. Eeep!
Q: What has been the most challenging part of the job thus far?
A: Sometimes it’s really hard to understand what a couple wants. Priyanka usually throws a ton of options out there to see what couples respond to best. If they don’t like anything she sends their way, it’s hard to stay patient.
The best way to resolve this, she says, is to push them to start looking for things they really spark to. Buy a ton of magazines (two copies each, so you can follow along!), and have them pick items they really love. Pinterest has also become a great resource for this.
Priyanka is a certified bridal consultant from Penn Foster University and a member of the Association of Bridal Consultants. She offers bridal consultations, day of coordination, and full wedding planning packages. She is currently based in Chicago. Get in touch with her!
